York Region District School Board to Host Community Vigil
We join Canadians and others around the world in mourning the loss of the victims of yesterday’s plane crash in Iran. We are heartbroken to learn that five of our students died in this devastating tragedy, from four of our schools: Adrienne Clarkson P.S., Beynon Fields P.S., Meadowbrook P.S. and Richmond Green S.S.
Our focus continues to be on providing support to students at the affected schools, and we have staff members trained in responding to tragic events at the schools this week.

Nothing prepares us for the news of the airline crash that took place in Iran on Wednesday, especially one that affects children and youth. Sadly, we are aware that our region and schools have been directly affected by this sudden and tragic loss of life.
We are heartbroken by the news and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with all those affected. This is a global tragedy affecting us locally and we join our families and communities in grieving.

With ongoing discussions about bargaining and potential provincial labour action in education, we recognize that many members of our community have questions and concerns about what this will mean for our students and schools.

Recently, in a small number of schools some families received student agenda planners from their school. These planners, ordered from a print vendor, are used to support students with organization and communicate with teachers. Over the weekend, we learned that some of the school agendas had a cover with cartoon depictions of students, which perpetuates stereotypes and stigmatizes children from racialized backgrounds. While we appreciate the intent of the cover was positive, we are grateful for the students who had the courage to come forward to resolve this matter.

Approving the Board’s $1.5 billion budget is one of the most important responsibilities trustees have, balancing providing a high-quality public education system with the need for financial sustainability and responsibility.
