Indigenous Languages and International Languages

Program Fee

In recognition of the continued hardships faced during the pandemic, the consumable/resource fee for the 2022-2023 will remain at $10.00. This is due at the time of registration to be paid online via Edsby for the elementary courses. For the secondary courses, payment will be due by the third class, with more information provided at a later date.

About the Program

Thank you for your interest in the Indigenous Languages and International Languages program at the York Region District School Board (YRDSB). We are pleased to welcome you to our exciting program.

  • The program is available to all YRDSB and non-YRDSB students
  • No prior language experience is necessary
  • Classes run Tuesday to Friday evenings and Saturday mornings

The program is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education and is intended for students who wish to learn a new language, preserve their own language or enhance their intercultural awareness. There is no cost to enroll in the program, except for a consumable and resource fee.

Please note: Courses are subject to enrollment and teacher availability. Stacked classes may be created based on registration numbers. Additional fees are required for international fee-paying visa students.

Elementary Courses (SK to Grade 8)

At this time we are planning for face-to-face, in-person instruction onsite for the 2022-2023 elementary program year. While we will be returning to the same ILIL school locations pre-pandemic, there may be some changes to the locations in which specific languages are offered.

Please be advised the program delivery model may change from face-to-face to remote (online) depending on the pandemic and from the Ministry of Education, York Health and Board directives.

Secondary Credit Courses (Grades 9 to 12)

During the pandemic, enrolment in the ILIL Credit program grew when compared to previous years. As a result, the program will remain in an Online format.

The program will be delivered virtually through synchronous learning, supported by  asynchronous activities.

If you have any questions, please email us at ilil@yrdsb.ca. You can also visit our homepage on the YRDSB website for further information regarding our program.

Research shows that speaking more than one language has many cognitive benefits and may improve how the brain functions, such as improving memory and concentration; enhance decision-making and multi-tasking skills; and open future employment opportunities.
