Once the student application has been accepted, there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled before arriving in Canada.
Secondary Students
-
Follow the steps required by your home country by IRCC to apply for a study permit.
It is mandatory for each student entering secondary school (grade 9-12) to register and complete the English test available in the Pre-Arrival Learning Program (PAL). The PAL program has multiple features; it assesses English proficiency, provides tutorials to increase use of English and vocabulary, and includes an orientation to the school board and the Homestay program. If the invitation to sign-up for PAL has not been received by the time the Letter of Acceptance is issued, please notify us by email at: international.education@yrdsb.ca. -
Once the Study Permit approval letter has been issued from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), book a flight to Canada.
-
Plan to arrive prior to the start of orientation which begins two weeks before the start of the semester (mid-August for the September semester, or mid-January for the February semester). More information will be forthcoming.
The latest date students may arrive is September 15 if starting school in September OR February 15 if starting school in February. If arrival is after these dates, enrollment will be deferred to the next semester. The school start date is indicated on the Letter of Acceptance. -
After booking a flight, share your arrival information with the Admissions Office.

Upon arrival in Canada, schedule an appointment with the Reception Centre for an educational assessment and to complete the school registration process. It is recommended that the student arrives in Canada at least one week prior to the start of the program.
Before Booking your Flight
Please visit the IRCC website regularly for updates to the travel policy. YRDSB is on the list of approved boards open to receive international students.
We encourage you to make travel plans only when your child has met all the travel conditions. International students, and accompanying family members, entering Canada must follow the travel guidelines established by the Government of Canada. A checklist is available to guide you through the steps. Important information to note:
In addition, please review the YRDSB Pre-departure, Travel & Arrival Guidelines. It is mandatory for all students to complete and return the Self-Isolation Plan (last page) to ies.service@yrdsb.ca prior to departure.
