YRDSB Commemorates World War I Centenary

News Release

11/3/2015

Aurora, ON – The events of World War I affected people on every continent and were critical to the development of Canada as a nation. To mark the WWI centenary, YRDSB students will be able to take part in themed events and activities, as well as create and share innovative projects.

During the 2015-16 school year, students from all grades are invited to submit artwork using any arts discipline to explore events and themes from WWI. Proposals are due by November 30, 2015. The final pieces need to be ready in April 2015 and will be showcased in May and June.

Interested high school students can take part in a field trip to Vimy, France in the spring of 2017. In partnership with the Vimy Foundation, YRDSB high schools have the opportunity to travel to England and France to participate in the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge. Students will serve as ambassadors, representing Canada, in honour of all who served.

“We encourage students to take part in these and future WWI centenary events. In doing so, they will learn multiple perspectives of the past that will help foster a more inclusive future,” said Allan Hoyle, Superintendent of Schools, Operations, York Region District School Board.

YRDSB staff have also created a public online exhibit about the war from a York Region perspective and a list of web resources for teachers looking at WWI from a global perspective.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 122,000 students in 174 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
