Thornlea Secondary School wins $20,000 in STEM Competition

News Release

6/14/2018

Mississauga, ON – On June 12, Samsung Canada announced that Thornlea Secondary School will receive $20,000 in technology as a result of their success in the 2018 Solve for Tomorrow Challenge.

Students used their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills to collaborate and provide solutions to real-world issues facing their communities.

Thornlea S.S. was one of four highest scoring projects from 50 regional finalists. Using technology, each school was tasked with creating a short video demonstrating the implementation of their unique, STEM-based community solution. The Thornlea S.S. students designed an auto-pollination system that would act as an alternative and a contingency plan to support plants that are dependent on endangered bees and other natural pollinators.

Students and teachers from Thornlea S.S. were selected as the winners representing the East in the regional division of the competition.

“We are so proud to see our students shine and represent Thornlea Secondary School so well. It is a testament to the great work York Region District School Board students and staff are doing to build future leaders in science, technology, engineering and math,” said Joe Foti, Principal of Thornlea S.S.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 124,000 students in 177 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
