In support of Autism Awareness Day, York Region District School Board will be taking part in Autism Ontario’s Raise the Flag campaign and hosting a flag raising ceremony. The flag raising is in honour of World Autism Awareness Day, which is recognized on April 2. YRDSB works closely with community partners to build stronger, more inclusive communities for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Why:
According to the National Epidemiological Database for the Study of Autism in Canada (NEDSAC), ASD is one of the most common developmental disabilities in Canada. 1 in 94 children is diagnosed with ASD. According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, approximately 1% of the Canadian population is affected by ASD, which means there are approximately 100,000 Ontarians on the autism spectrum.
