News Release

5/17/2017

Aurora, ON – York Region District School Board’s five-year graduation rate has climbed to an impressive 93 per cent, a half percent higher than last year’s rate.

Results indicate that over the past seven cohorts of students, the graduation rates of our students has steadily grown from 86.5 to 93 per cent – an increase of over six per cent.

The York public board’s graduation rate exceeds the provincial rate of 86 by seven per cent.

Continuously increasing student achievement and well-being is a key component of the trustees’ Multi-Year Plan,” said Loralea Carruthers, Chair of the Board. “We’re proud of all the hard work our students do to graduate well prepared for the various pathways ahead of them.”

“We are incredibly proud of the academic achievements of our students,” said Kathi Wallace, Interim Director of Education for York Region District School Board. “These achievements are made possible thanks to the commitment and excellent work of our students, staff members, families and school communities.”

The graduation rate is the percentage of students belonging to the same Grade 9 cohort who obtained an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent within five years of beginning high school, less attrition.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 123,000 students in 176 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
