York Region District School Board Supporting Students During Ramadan

News Release

5/30/2017

Aurora, ON – Working collaboratively with faith leaders, in support of YRDSB students, staff and families, the Board has developed recommendations for schools to consider when planning for exams and culminating assignments during Ramadan.

York Region District School Board (YRDSB) serves one of the most diverse communities in the country and values the uniqueness and diversity of its students and communities and is proud to accommodate all students as we strive to a create safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.

This is reflected in YRDSB’s Equity and Inclusivity Policy and Procedures #261 and specifically the Religious Accommodations Procedure # 261.8.

In most secondary schools, exams are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 20. The Board has asked schools to take into consideration fasting fatigue supports for students when scheduling afternoon exams.

In addition, during Ramadan students may participate in activities that include going to the mosque late at night. As a result, students may need additional time during the school day to complete activities.

“It is important that we support our students, staff and families who are fasting during Ramadan,” said Loralea Carruthers, Chair of York Region District School Board. “Ensuring that everyone feels safe, supported and included in our schools is our top priority.”

“Our Board continues to look for ways to balance academics and student well-being during assessment time, and this is one more way YRDSB is supporting student needs,” said Kathryn Wallace, Interim Director of Education. “To all those who observe, I wish you a peaceful Ramadan.”

In addition to these supports for exams, schools were also asked to consider students and staff participating in Ramadan when planning athletic, play days or spirit days and to include a balance of indoor and outdoor activities for those who may be fasting. Elementary schools have received recommendations to begin graduation ceremonies earlier in the day to accommodate families attending evening prayer at the mosque and for breaking of the fast. Secondary schools have received recommendations to have their ceremonies earlier in the evening and limit their events to two hours.

To support students and staff observing Ramadan, YRDSB schools also provide an appropriate space, apart from the lunchroom or cafeteria, during mealtimes, while they are fasting.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 123,000 students in 176 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
