Roots of Empathy Year-End Celebration

Media Advisory

5/29/2017

York Region public schools with a Roots of Empathy program have been invited to a year-end celebration. This event will bring together Roots of Empathy families, instructors, teachers and administrators. Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that has shown significant effect in reducing levels of aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. The program, which includes 27 lessons, has at its heart a neighbourhood infant and parent who engage students in their classroom nine times over the school year. A Roots of Empathy instructor coaches the students to observe the baby’s development and to label the baby’s feelings. In this experiential learning, the baby is ‘teacher’ and catalyst for instruction to help children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others – empathy.
