York Region Public Elementary Students Exceed Provincial Averages

Aurora, ON – York Region District School Board continues to exceed provincial averages in the recently released 2017 results from Ontario’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

“As trustees, we are working hard to improve student achievement and well-being and create learning environments that are welcoming and inclusive,” said Loralea Carruthers, Chair of the York Region District School Board. “We are proud of the work of our students, supported by families and staff members, and continue to look for innovative ways to improve learning and ensure equity for all.”

Among Grade 3 students in York Region District School Board, 81% achieved the provincial standards in reading, 82% in writing and 74% in mathematics. This compares with provincial averages of 74%, 73% and 62% respectively.

Among York Region’s Grade 6 public school students, 87% achieved the provincial standard in reading, 87% in writing and 63% in mathematics. This compares with provincial averages of 81%, 79% and 50% respectively.

“EQAO data is one measure, which when combined with other forms of assessment, help us to identify areas of improvement for our schools and system,” said Kathryn Wallace, Interim Director of Education, York Region District School Board. “We will use the data from the EQAO report, along with our other assessment data and our recent climate surveys to inform our Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being.”

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 123,000 students in 177 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools.
