De-streaming

Schools in Ontario will no longer stream students into Academic and Applied courses in Grade 9.  Most students entering grade 9 will take Academic English, French and Geography and will take de-streamed Math and Science.

The information below is also available as a poster: What Families Want to Know About De-streaming (PDF).

The following questions and answers are also available as translated posters (PDF).

What Do Families Want to Know About De-Streaming

  • Streaming means separating students into different course types such as Academic, Applied and Locally Developed.

  • De-streaming means that schools  will no longer be offering courses in the Applied Stream.

  • Research shows that de-streaming results in better outcomes for all students and particularly for those who are from marginalized communities.

  • Teachers will implement the Individual Education Plan for students who have Special Education needs.
  • Teachers will continue to work collaboratively with Special Education Resource Teachers to support students in Secondary School.

  • Locally Developed courses support students who have not yet demonstrated achievement of the majority of curriculum expectations in Grade 7 and 8.
  • Locally Developed courses are offered at the Grade 9 and Grade 10 level in the areas of English, Math, Science and/or History.
  • Locally Developed courses accommodate educational and/or career preparation needs that are not met through other courses.
  • Programs at college and university as well as some apprenticeship programs may not accept courses in this pathway for admission.

  • Students who are recommended to take the Locally Developed course may:
    • be working on significantly modified curriculum expectations in Grades 7 & 8.
    • not yet working at grade level and require additional support.

  • At what grade level is my child working independently without modifications?
  • What is my child’s current achievement level?
  • Is my child working with modifications (changes made in grade level expectations) or accommodations (supports that do not change course expectations)?

  • Students who complete Locally Developed courses in Grade 9 and 10 are being prepared to go directly into Grade 11 Workplace courses, which lead to employment and/or apprenticeship opportunities after high school.
  • Students who successfully complete Locally Developed courses in Grade 9 could then take the same Grade 9 subject in a different course type, such as de-streamed.  This pathway could then lead to college, apprenticeship or university courses and programs in Grades 11 and 12.
