We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn this weekend of the attacks in Sri Lanka. We stand in solidarity with the various Christian communities and all those affected in Sri Lanka and here in York Region. Our hearts are broken along with those affected in Sri Lanka and around the world.
There is no room for this type of hate and violence in our society. This latest evidence of hate in our world must be combatted by our dedication to equity. We are committed to upholding the rights of all students and their families and staff members to feel safe and know they matter and belong.
York Region District School Board stands with our Sri Lankan community and all those affected by this tragedy. As a demonstration of respect, the flag at our Board office will be lowered April 23-24.
If you would like tips for speaking to children about tragic events, you can find information on our website.
Sincerely,
Corrie McBain Louise Sirisko
Board Chair Director of Education
