Bank of Canada School Visit

Last year, Grade 2 students at Summitview Public School did research on Viola Desmond and took part in a letter writing campaign regarding the new $10 bill being planned by the Bank of Canada.

Representatives from the Bank of Canada, joined by members of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) dressed in Red Serge, will visit Summitview Public School to recognize the efforts of the students who wrote the letters last spring.

During the visit, staff and students will celebrate the positive impact that their social actions have had on one another and in the broader community. Some of the accomplishments to be celebrated include:

  • Grade 2 (now Grade 3) students’ letter writing campaign for a Viola Desmond $10 bill
  • Student initiated project, Love Boxes, for a Pickering hospital
  • Social justice group’s work at the school

Why:

In November, the Bank issued a new $10 bill featuring a portrait of Viola Desmond and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg. The new bill acknowledges the past and continuing efforts toward achieving social justice for all Canadians.
