A new program offered by the York Region District School Board and City of Markham allows secondary students to earn a secondary school credit while also earning lifeguarding certification and lifesaving instructor qualifications.
The Aquatic Leadership Program uses a blended learning format consisting of pool instruction, face-to-face instruction in class and on-line learning. An examiner from the Lifesaving Society evaluates the final aquatic skills examinations for the lifeguarding and swim and lifesaving instructor certifications. Students must pass the final exam, including the in-water examinations, in order to receive their qualifications.
Credits and certifications may be granted independently.
Part Two of the program gets underway on Tuesday, February 7. Students have until Tuesday, January 31 to apply online. There is a $200 cost for the course.

The program runs February 7 to June 13, 2017.
Pool instruction and face-to-face instruction occurs on specifically scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.. There will be three Saturday classes and a final in-pool exam.
The remaining curriculum expectations will be delivered through on-line learning when face-to-face instruction is not required.
Who:
Students who are 16 years of age or older by June 10 and hold a Bronze Cross certification and Standard First Aid may apply.
