Adult Students Get a Second Chance at Finishing High School

News Release

6/28/2018

Markham, ON – York Region District School Board piloted the Adult Dual Credit Program this year and there was a 100% success rate. All participating students earned a secondary school credit along with a college-level credit from Seneca College. This credit enabled 12 of the 19 students to get the final credits they needed to complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and to graduate this week.

Many of the adult students chose to return to high school so they could finish what they started. “We are so proud of our students. They have succeeded at furthering their education and have shown that it is never too late to go back to school” said Annette Oliver, Vice-Principal of Continuing Education. This year’s valedictorian, Kyle Williams, returned to school after dropping out of high school 10 years ago. He will be enrolled in a paramedic program in the fall.

The dual credit programs are ministry-approved programs that allow students to take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards both the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship.

Participating in dual credit programs help students make a successful transition to college or to an apprenticeship program, increase their awareness of the various educational pathways available in college and university, and support career planning.

York Region District School Board offers dual credit opportunities for Grade 11 and 12 students and for adult students in partnership with local colleges including: Centennial College, Fleming College, George Brown College, Georgian College, Humber College and Seneca College.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 124,000 students in 177 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario.
