Credit Accumulation

One critical success indicator used to monitor system improvement is to examine credit accumulation. Credit accumulation is the rate (percentage in each grade) at which a student earns their expected credits in secondary schools towards a diploma. A student working towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is considered on track or pace when they complete eight credits by the end of Grade 9, 16 credits by the end of Grade 10, 23 credits by the end of Grade 11, and the full required 30 credits by the end of their 4th year of high school.

In the 2021-2022 school year, 89.6%* of all Grade 10 students had completed 16+ credits as of June 30 of their second year in high school.

  • *This calculation includes students who were enrolled in secondary school, in Grade 10 as of June 30, 2022, and have attempted five or more credits during the school year.
  • Earning at least 30 credits (including 18 compulsory credits and 12 optional credits) is only one of the requirements for obtaining an OSSD as students must also complete a literacy requirement, a public service requirement, and specific course requirements.
