When my group travelled to Europe, we were all assigned a soldier to research with the CWGC records. I created a sign of commemoration that now lies at his grave for those passing by to honor his life.

In Memory of Lance Corporal, Raymond Affleck

February 26, 1895 - April 9, 1917.

Lance Corporal, Raymond Affleck was born February 26, 1895 in Glasgow Station, Ontario by Lillian and John Affleck. Raymond was the second oldest of 4 brothers on ‘Beaver Creek Farm’ and graduated Arnprior High School aspiring to become a Schoolmaster. He was 6’1” and 20 years old when he enlisted in Montreal, Canada on October 7, 1915 as part of the 73rd Battalion of Royal Highlanders and arrived in France in August, 1916. Affleck was later promoted from Private to Lance Corporal and participated in the battle of Vimy Ridge apart of the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. Raymond Affleck was killed in action at Vimy Ridge, Souchez Area on April 9, 1917, age 22. He will never be forgotten for his contributions to our Canadian History and Identity that was made during the First World War. Thank you Raymond for your extraordinary life.​
