Summer Program Helps Students Gain Leadership Skills

The Leadership and Peer Support Program is a summer program for students with disabilities that focuses on building leadership skills, setting goals, building confidence and preparing students for the future.

"I met a lot of nice teachers and great friends and classmates," said Kevin, Grade 10 student. "I actually learned how to be more confident in myself and express myself."

Students can earn a credit while developing valuable life and leadership skills, such as taking public transit, cooking, planning activities and participating on an overnight trip.

"I thought that all the teachers and staff were very nice and all the students were very welcoming and the teachers," said Alexis, Grade 12 student. "I would say thank you to all the teachers in this program because they believe in us and they want you to succeed in life"

"With all the activities that the students did, I see a lot of growth, there's a lot of self-confidence. The students show that a lot of leadership skills were in the roles that they take on," said Nadia Bruce, Intervention Support Worker, Milliken Mills H.S. "We see how confident they are in terms of running the activities independently. So, it's an amazing program and we see it in the students every day.
