It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news that, over the weekend, Student Trustee Munira Chakera, passed away as a result of a motor vehicle collision. We share our deepest condolences with her family, friends and all those affected by the tragedy. Munira’s leadership and positive presence was felt by many at her school at Stouffville District Secondary School and throughout the region and the grief and sense of loss will affect many.
As a school board, it is important that we focus on providing support to students who are affected by the tragedy. In the coming days, the Board’s Traumatic Events Support team will be deployed to Munira’s school and other locations that may be directly affected. Any family who feels their child may need support; please speak to your school so that we may coordinate appropriate resources and support.

Flags at the school and board administrative locations will be lowered to half-mast until the day of the service. We appreciate that many in the community may have questions or wish to provide support to the family. At this time, we are respecting the family’s wishes for privacy and ask that our students and staff members be provided with the time and space to grieve.
