Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education and certification program for grades K-12 that helps school communities develop both ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the ecological footprint of schools. It consists of six components: Teamwork and Leadership, Waste Minimization, Energy Conservation, School Ground Greening, Curriculum, and Environmental Stewardship. YRDSB now has 119 certified EcoSchools and Outdoor Education Centers with more schools getting involved each year!
There are a number of environmental programs practiced in support of Eco-schools. Each school is responsible for the decisions and delivery of environmental programs and therefore these programs may not be available in every school. To learn more about the programs in a particular school visit the school’s website or contact the school’s principal.
