Student Agenda Planners
Recently, in a small number of schools some families received student agenda planners from their school. These planners, ordered from a print vendor, are used to support students with organization and communicate with teachers. Over the weekend, we learned that some of the school agendas had a cover with cartoon depictions of students, which perpetuates stereotypes and stigmatizes children from racialized backgrounds. While we appreciate the intent of the cover was positive, we are grateful for the students who had the courage to come forward to resolve this matter.

Dear families,
Like many of you, earlier this morning I was disappointed to see a media article depicting violence amidst allegations of anti-black racism at one of our schools. Such actions are not acceptable in our schools or communities. While this is not an experience we want for any of our students, we take both matters extremely seriously and are putting supports in place for those affected. We are sorry for the hurt this experience is causing.

We were saddened this morning to learn that the victim of the tragic homicide in Whitchurch-Stouffville last week was a student at Maple H.S. Our thoughts are with the student’s family and friends, and with all of those who are affected by this loss and act of violence. A tragedy like this deeply affects our communities.
