Dear families,

I’ve been hearing the many engaged and passionate voices of our students, families, community members and partners, and your questions and concerns regarding the recent election results in East Gwillimbury and Whitchurch-Stouffville.

As Chair McBain has mentioned, the Board is legally required to follow the Municipal Elections Act and the Education Act. Regardless of the context, the messages attributed to the trustee-elect were xenophobic, racist and hurtful.  I am saddened by the hurt these words are causing our students, staff and communities. However, I want to provide you with the reassurance that we care deeply about the success and well-being of all our students. I am listening to your voices and remain committed to our values of equity and inclusion and upholding Human Rights for all. Never doubt the dedication of our staff members, students, families and community members to stand up for equity and Human Rights. Students are at the centre of our work - and this will never change.

York Region is a wonderfully diverse community, and we’re proud of this diversity. It makes us stronger and is embraced and celebrated. We will continue to stand up against any form of hate and discrimination, and we will continue the work of implementing our Equity Action Plan, the Multi-year Strategic Plan’s and Director’s Annual Plan priority of championing equity and inclusivity.

Thank you to everyone championing our shared values of equity and inclusivity. Your voices will make our communities more welcoming and inclusive for all. We will continue to work together for our students.

Sincerely,

Louise Sirisko

Director of Education
