Meeting 2014-2018 Multi-Year Plan Goals
As the governing body of the York Region District School Board, trustees establish an annual Multi-Year Plan to guide system direction for a three to four-year period. The Multi-Year Plan is a reflection of emergent priorities identified by our educational communities.
YRDSB staff implemented strategies and actions to meet the goals set out in the Multi-Year Plan. Below are some of the strategies and actions that were implemented to support trustees’ multi-year plan goals in 2017-18.

Student Achievement and Well-being

Every Student Counts Survey in development for 2017-18 year to link student demographic data, perception data and achievement data.
Results of the 2017 School Climate Survey being used to develop supports and recovery strategies related to equity issues identified by students and parents. Brought together 1,000 staff, students and community members at Ring of Peace, a unity rally to show support for safe, inclusionary spaces free from discrimination and hate for all learners in York Region. |

Put forward balanced budget for 2017-18 school year. Opened one new elementary school (Barbara Reid Public School) and one secondary school (Bill Hogarth Secondary School). Created new policy to oversee Director of Education recruitment and appraisal process. Director, trustees and senior team completed human rights and equity training. Director and senior administration undertook governance training. Initiated process of establishing the office of an Integrity Commissioner. Staff facilitated "Coffee Chats" - drop in sessions for parents and community members to meet with trustees and Chair of the Board. Initiated comprehensive employment equity plan including an employment equity survey and systems review. YRDSB named one of top three energy efficient school boards in Ontario. 113 elementary schools, secondary schools and Outdoor Education centres achieved eco certification.

Delivery of Effective and Sustainable Educational Programs

Annual Fusion/Our Voice conference held where students participated in workshops on topics related to mental health, racism, social justice and Gay Straight Alliances. Student trustee elections streamed to participating schools across the district. A dialogue at an Educator Network (Alliance of Educators for Black Students) identified a need to work with black, male youth to address attendance and academic achievement issues. This learning will be applied to other race/heritage student demographics moving forward. A panel of Asian and South Asian students shared their stories of marginalization and paths of inclusion in their schools for teachers and students of Asian/South Asian heritage. Partnered with Southlake Regional Health Centre to provide students with an opportunity to collaborate, problem solve and apply learning in a hospital environment. Secondary students worked with healthcare professionals to develop creative solutions to reduce falls in post-operative patients. Sir Wilfrid Laurier P.S. students hosted an event with Intel Canada Ltd. focused on learning in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students built personal computers and were introduced to robotics and programming. |
