Thank you for your contribution to the education of York Region students. Schools alone cannot educate students. Partnerships are essential. One of the purposes of community involvement is to develop strong ties between students and their communities. Community members may be asked by students to sponsor a community involvement activity. Training and equipment will be provided by the community sponsors or organizations. It is crucial that students fulfil their community involvement requirement in a safe environment. The person overseeing a student’s activity must verify the date(s) and the number of hours completed on the Notification and Completion of Community Involvement Activities Form. The community sponsor may wish to provide feedback to the student in the comment section of the form. Sponsors are advised that activities undertaken outside of the school will not be supervised by York Region District School Board staff.
Liability Insurance
Students are covered by the Board’s insurance plan for liability losses arising from the student’s defined activities within the 40 hours of community involvement or other limit set by the high school if the Notification and Completion of Community Involvement Activities Form is completed. For example, if a student in the course of his/her activities, causes damages or injuries to a third party and this results in a lawsuit against the student, the Board’s insurance will protect the student, provided the notification portion of the form is completed and submitted to the school prior to commencing the activity.
Community sponsors will be responsible for ensuring their liability insurance will protect them for their involvement in this program.
