In-house: Visit the Museum for the Schoolhouse Experience
Grade 3
The school bell rings, and students travel back in time as they enter School Section No. 5 Markham for the day in role as a pupil from 1850. This program also includes analysis of classroom artifacts, and reflections and discussions that cover topics such as settlement history, residential schooling and segregated schooling, and what daily life was like for students here in York Region.

Social Studies Grade 3 Strand A. Heritage and Identity: Communities in Canada, 1780–1850.
Grade 7/8
Students visit the Heritage Schoolhouse where they will learn disciplinary thinking skills and be taught how to think and work as a curator and an historian, while covering topics such as settlement history, segregated schooling, and what daily life was like for students. The morning is spent engaged in inquiry based learning, where students examine artefacts and primary sources. In the afternoon, students will explore through role-play what it was like to be a pupil in the year 1900.
