Confirming the Multi-Year Strategic Plan

Last updated on

At the July 9, 2019 Board meeting, the Board of Trustees conducted important business to confirm the Trustees’ Multi-Year Strategic Plan and completion of the Director’s performance review. Below are the statements from the Board meeting.

As follow up to the breach of the code of conduct decision reached at the June 17, 2019 Special Board meeting, the formal censure of Trustee Elizabeth Terrell-Tracey was delivered during public session.

Yesterday, the Board also approved a balanced $1.515 billion budget for the 2019-2020 school year. We’re proud to once again present a balanced budget that is focused on the classroom and providing students with the support they need to succeed. More information regarding the 2019-2020 budget will be released in the near future as documentation is finalized.

Before signing off for summer, I want to acknowledge the hard work of our students and thank families and staff for your roles in supporting students through another successful school year.

Confirming the Multi-Year Strategic Plan

It is my pleasure to confirm that on June 10, 2019 at the Board Governance Review Committee meeting, trustees and the Director have engaged in the required annual review of the Multi-Year Strategic Plan.  Trustees have reaffirmed our four priorities:

  • Empower Ethical Leadership

  • Champion Equity and Inclusivity

  • Build Collaborative Relationships

  • Foster Well-Being and Mental Health

Today, the Director will present her first Annual Report outlining progress on achievement of Board Priorities and Goals.  This is a key component of the Trustees’ monitoring function.

Trustees are committed to keeping Student Success at the centre of all Board decisions including budget and policy development.  Staff are thanked for demonstrating to trustees their commitment to using evidence to ensure operations are aligned with the Multi-Year Strategic Plan and monitoring progress in order to ensure the Board continues to move in the right direction.

The York Region District School Board of Trustees is committed to supporting student success through our strategic priorities and management of our sole employee, the Director of Education.  Our performance review process and evaluation criteria for the Director is publicly posted to ensure transparency and accountability to our communities.

Confirming the Director’s Annual Performance Review

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to confirm that the Annual Performance Review for Director of Education Louise Sirisko has been completed. This year’s review included confidential 360-degree performance feedback managed by a third party consultant. I am pleased to share that over 60 individuals responded to the survey.  All trustees, student trustees and members of senior team were asked to participate. In addition, representatives from the Board’s Audit Committee, Special Education Advisory Committee, Equity and Inclusivity Advisory Committee, Parent, Family and Community Advisory Committee, unions and federations, other employee groups and identified community partners were asked to provide input.  Input was consolidated into themes by the external consultant and shared with trustees in order to support constructive, strategic dialogue with the Director.

I would like to thank the community partners, staff, student trustees and trustees who participated in this robust process.  The time you have invested supports our Director and by extension the success of our students.

The Director of Education Position Profile for July 2019 to June 2020 was approved by the Board and will be updated on the Board’s public website.

Sincerely,

Corrie McBain

Board Chair
