Deaf and Hard of Hearing Preschool Program

Program Options

  • Weekly/Bi-Weekly Home or Daycare visits
  • Consultation/Monitor as needed

 

Eligibility

  • Audiology assessment documenting a permanent hearing loss
  • Use of hearing technology (if prescribed)
  • Resident of York Region (Public or Catholic school supporters)
  • 2-4 years of age (by December 31st)

 

Features

  • Assessment and support to promote the development of listening, speech, language, pre-literacy, and social/emotional development 
  • Child/family-centered approach to learning and reinforcing goals in the home
  • Support from Specialist Teachers for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Support with understanding hearing loss/audiograms, and consistent use of hearing technology (hearing aids, cochlear implants, BAHAs) 
  • Auditory-Verbal intervention practices
  • Collaboration with Community Partners (Audiology, Tri-Regional Infant Hearing Program, York Region Preschool Speech and Language, Provincial Demonstration School Board and Early Intervention Services)
  • Readiness skills and support with the transition to school 

 

Goals

  • To develop consistent use of hearing technology from the earliest age
  • To maximize the development of auditory/listening skills
  • To promote the development of spoken language communication 
  • To foster intellectual, social and emotional growth 
  • To support families in understanding the nature/implications of hearing loss
  • To support families in accessing community and educational resources 
  • To promote a smooth transition to school (Public, Catholic or Private)

 

Accessing Preschool Services

  • Referral from a community organization or self-referral by phone/email
  • Contact the current Coordinator of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services 
  • Share copy of most recent audiogram showing a permanent hearing loss
  • Intake interview/consultation to determine level/type of support needed
