June 24, 2021 - Kevin Qu of Newmarket H.S. and Eva Sosnina of Thornlea S.S. have earned prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarships.
According to the organization’s website, Schulich Leader Scholarships have been awarded to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students since 2012. The over 100 million dollar scholarship fund provides up to 100 undergraduate scholarships in Canada each year.
Both students recalled experiences from their time in high school that helped prepare them for their next step. Both students credited the supportive people and unique learning opportunities in their schools as helping them prepare for the next step in their academic career.
Qu will be attending the University of Toronto for Engineering Science. “I chose engineering because of how varied the field is. Throughout high school I was able to participate in activities involving programming, engineering and even business. I found that engineering’s combination of programming and science interested me the most, and its associated research and work opportunities are tremendous,” Qu said. “I was in disbelief when I had won the scholarship. I remember sitting at my desk and re-reading my offer letter at least two or three times before I finally realized what this meant.”
Sosnina is planning to attend the University of Saskatchewan, also in an engineering program. “I first heard about the Schulich Leader Scholarship in grade 10 when I was researching different universities and post-secondary opportunities. I clearly remember hoping that I would become one of the recipients of the scholarship without actually thinking it could be possible and for this to become reality is very surreal and humbling,” she explained.
